StyleStars: Seeing Red

L to R: Evan Rachel Wood in Gucci at the Fashion Group International's Night of Stars in New York, Julianne Moore at the London premiere of Chloe, Annalynne McCord in Guess at an Invisible Children event in Beverly Hills, Scarlett Johansson in Givenchy at a Moet event in Tokyo, Zoe Saldana in Giambattista Valli at the Japan premiere of Avatar

First Look: Carlos Falchi for Target

Back in May, it was announced that luxe exotic skin handbag designer Carlos Falchi would be bringing his unique bags to Target, using faux skin materials in an array of jewel tones and contrasting shades.

Well, that time has arrived. The collection, priced from $19.99 - $49.99, was originally slated to debut in early October but is now set to launch on November 1st (that's this Sunday, can you believe it?) and it will stay through December 27th.

The photos are out and the bags look pretty damn good! We're admittedly not very big fans of faux skins or hobo shapes, but definitely have our eye on a couple of these styles. Considering his namesake collection is well into the thousands, getting the same look for under $50 bucks is not a bad deal at all.

Check out our favorites below and for more images go here.

Oh Boye! Olsen Twins Set To Debut Another Line

By now you are probably familiar with power-twins Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen's fashion lines The Row and Elizabeth & James. Well they've just added another to the stable.

The twins recently announced they will be teaming up with JCPenney to release Olsenboye, a low-priced juniors line aimed at teen girls with pieces ranging from $20-50. The collection, sized 0-15, includes denim, dresses, separates and handbags and shoes and will hit select J.C. Penney stores and the website on November 6th.

From the first looks obtained by WWD and the teaser video on the official website, Olsenboye.com, it seems to reflect the standard teen market offerings with striped and logo tees, plaid button-downs, hoodies and shrunken blazers. Quite a departure from their usual high-end fare, but a smart business move none the less, since anything the twins' names touch pretty much turns to gold.

"Mary Kate and I watch current trends and see our partnership with J.C. Penney as an opportunity to add something unique to the marketplace, especially in the current retail climate," said Ashley Olsen to WWD.

As part of their marketing scheme, they are focusing on the teen-friendly social networking outlets of Twitter and Facebook and currently have a "treat truck" riding around Manhattan to promote the new venture.

The collection is said to be for a limited time only, but we are anxious to see how it is received! What do you think of the looks?

Trend Report: Spring 2010, Prints Please

One trend we are loving for Spring is quirky cutesy prints seen all over the recent runways. From the kitty cats at Miu Miu to the cherries and strawberries at Moschino and YSL respectively, the florals of seasons past give way to cheeky little looks that celebrate the little girl in all of us.

It's A Bloggy Blog World: Gaultier Is Indeed A Go For Target, An Award For Grace & More!

Rocks Off - Exhibitionist, the rocker-inspired jewelry line designed by Michael Spirito and loved by trendsetters like Rihanna and Gwen Stefani, is making it's way to Sears in early November for a lower-priced offering titled Rock & Redemption. @ChicReport

American Woman - Philadelphia native and Phashionista mascot Grace Kelly, along with jeweler Cartier are the newest to receive the Rodeo Drive Walk Of Style Award presented in Beverly Hills. @HuffPo

Coming Soon - More sneak peeks of the upcoming Rodarte for Target collection launching December 20th. We're still digesting, but so far the black halter dress is our favorite. @Nitrolicious

Would You Or Wouldn't You: Overalls

The Spring 2010 collections brought a few themes that made many a fashion person wrinkle their foreheads in puzzlement.

There were fannypacks at Rachel Comey, Walter and Marc Jacobs. Clogs at Chanel and Louis Vuitton. And there were overalls, which showed up feminine, floral and flowing at Roberto Cavalli, both weathered denim and silvery metallic evening at Ralph Lauren at urban street at Jean Paul Gaultier.

Back in the day (mid 90's to be precise), overalls was one of our go-to looks. So easy and comfy, how could you go wrong? We clearly remember wearing the hell out of a camel colored corduroy pair from Gap Kids. And we definitely remember the time when wearing one strap of your overalls unhooked was the look to rock (along with brown lipstick, pacifiers and a myriad of other things we'd rather not remember).

But what about now? Does this recent re-emergence of the look on the runways make you flirt with the idea of jumping back into that old comfy onesie?

We think it has potential to be really cute on the right person, with the right layers underneath. And obviously the right pair. But we're not so sure about rocking the look ourselves just yet. What about you?

Trend Report: Spring 2010, Going Graphic

(click for larger viewing)
Among the sea of pastels at Spring 2010 fashion week, there was a running theme of graphic black and white looks that showed up in New York at Zero + Maria Cornejo, Tommy Hilfiger and Matthew Ames, in London at Issa, Jaeger, PPQ and Josh Goot, Milan at Kinder Aggugini and Paris at Givenchy and Jean Paul Gaultier. Whether it's bold stripes, dizzying checks, or geometrical, the contrasting look is at once both classic and modern, season-less and totally chic.

Chief Gay: Project Runway Season Six, Episode Eight

This week's challenge had the designers making a new garment out of the wedding dress of a recently divorced woman. Meant to empower the divorcee as she begins a new chapter of her life, some designers made wonderful dresses, while some missed the mark completely.

Tapping into her own divorced history, SunnyYugoslavia created a shredded punk rock look that made her client look 10 years younger. Using only the lining of the old dress, which she hand-dyed, SunnyYugo was finally able to show her unique point of view as a designer, earning the first victory she has seen all season.

Shirin & Not-Shirin were also praised for utilizing the most fabric from the former wedding gowns (and Shirin didn't have all that much to work with), and both found themselves in the Top Three this week.

Meanwhile, ChinStrap ended up in the Bottom Three again for making a silver garbage bag dress with too much volume & crinkle. Thankfully, he didn't cry over his failure so much this week.

HotLogan showed us a sloppily executed pantsuit with unflattering proportions all over the place. He was spared the cut, but just barely.

It was BobMarley who got the Gunn Kiss of Death, mostly because somehow he didn't understand he was supposed to use the wedding dress fabric in his new design! Lay off the reefer, my friend. Heidi said his union jack corset brought to mind images of Oktoberfest and pirates' wenches, which earned him a one-way ticket home.

Overall, this has been a lackluster season, hopefully in the second half, the designers will start to step it up. Here's hoping!

Current Obsession: In The Clear

(click for larger viewing)

The fashion world's jaws collectively dropped as Miuccia Prada sent down clear plastic and jeweled accessories on her beachy-themed runway a few weeks ago in Milan, making it one of the most exciting shows of Spring 2010.

So fresh and fun was the collection that it clearly (ha!) made us want to get our paws on some see-through stuff right away. Then, yesterday, we got a sneak peek at go-to jeweler R.J. Graziano's Spring 10 offerings with their clear lucite orb necklace which just kind of drove our new obsession deeper.

With Prada's smash-hit reaction, it's only a matter of time before the lookalike pieces start popping up everywhere, but, as usual, Forever 21 has a head start, we spotted (and promptly bought) a Prada-esque jewel necklace there just today!

Trend Report: Spring 2010, TechnoSport

Many designers this season veered away from the romantic and grunge influences that have been extremely popular in recent seasons and showed modern futuristic-inspired sportswear with skintight silhouettes, buckles, straps and snaps galore for a fresh new look that dare we say is out of this world.

Philadelphia Fashion Week: The Recap

Well our first official Philadelphia Fashion Week has come and gone. Three days of models, music, mingling and most importantly, fashion.

TV personality David Evangelista emcees day 1

Where to begin... Let's get the bad out of the way first shall we?

Out of the 20 shows, including a mix of 17 local and national designers and 3 area college presentations, we'd say about 8 deserved to be there.

You see, there was a heavy emphasis on streetwear clothing, with Palmieri Jeans, Kill City, Love Brigade, Brooklyn Royalty, Wrath Arcane, Street Star, Nine Days, Commonwealth Proper, Parke & Ronen, Triple Five Soul sending out endless graphic tees, tanks, plaid shirts, shorts, button-downs, denim and hoodies down the runway. (And hey, Love Brigade, what was with the guy that kept lifting up his shirt to show his stomach? And was that you playing model Matthew Izzo!?)

Love Brigade

The event was created to show the world "who we are and what we wear." Great idea, but doesn't the world already know that Philadelphia can do streetwear? Don't we want to move away from that image of jeans, tees and sneakers and be taken seriously? If we are ever to be taken seriously as a fashionable city, which we believe was part of the intent in creating this whole thing, then we must step it up and show serious fashion. And by 'serious fashion' we don't mean getting all Paris fashion week avant-garde crazy, but rather, well-constructed, thought-out, quality clothing that makes people open their eyes and pay attention. We also could do without the props and poses and beefcake models. Just sayin'.

Brooklyn Royalty

Marina Makaron Moscow was a bit more interesting to look at with colorful printed dresses and tons of scarves, but it was all a little, I don't know, kooky? Tacky? Euro, but not in a good way?

Marina Makaron Moscow

Delicious had a more interesting show as well, with some good corsetry going on, some goth and military influence, not exactly our cup of tea, though were sure there's people out there that would love it.

Delicious

S.LOVE brought the goth with tons of black, seemingly Gareth Pugh-inspired looks that were of the more avant-garde variety. Interesting concept. Our favorite was the stringy warrior-looking dress. Kind of reminded us of Rodarte SS10.

S.LOVE

So, who did this the best at Philly Fashion Week? Philadelphia University, SA VA, Melani von Alexandria, GAR-DE and Strangefruit, with our pick for the best going to Philadelphia University.

Philadelphia University

Yeah we know they're students, but each mini-collection (the participating schools each sent out several collections of 3-5 looks from various students) they sent down the runway was: 1. interesting, 2. well-constructed and cohesive, 3. wearable and just plain-old cute and of the moment! From cocktail dresses, chic day looks, to swimwear and hip seperates, they had a bit of everything and it was all so well done.

A vignette of looks from Moore College of Art + Design

Deservedly so, they ended up beating out Moore (which had some good stuff) and Art Institute (which we didn't catch) for the Macy's Student Design Award, which involves an encore performance and display at Macy's Center City.

SA VA, the eco-conscious fashion-forward label who recently opened up shop on Sansom Street showed some great looking things as well. Fun prints and unique silhouettes. Think Anthropologie with a bit more edge. Kudos to them for the cute and very Spring 2010 side braid as well.

SA VA

Strangefruit, a Philly-based label, had some great looks. Very military-inspired with a touch of Victorian. Lots of earthy tones, and definitely wearable. Loved that salmon colored dress.

Strangefruit

GAR-DE, a label from New York, had some super cute bomber jackets and chic tuxedo pants. Super wearable and very luxe-looking.

GAR-DE

Melani von Alexandria, a Philly native, closed the whole thing out with some very pretty cocktail numbers, great use of ostrich and draping. Also very luxe-looking and definitely ended the event on a high note.

Melani von Alexandria

Aside from the fashion, the venue was amazing and the absolute perfect place to stage this thing. Everything looked great, sounded great, people were well-fed, the cocktails were flowing, the art installation was rad. Oh and the pop-up shops. Great way to kill time between shows.

Triple Five Soul

Overall, we'd really like to see this become a tradition. Was it worth $75 a day? Not really. Were most of the shows blah? Unfortunately, yes. But considering this is the first time anything of this caliber has been done, of course there's going to be flaws and things to improve on. And we assume it wasn't easy getting quality participants, as everyone kind of didn't know how it would all turn out, considering the fledgling efforts in the past.

L to R: Michael Anderer, Kristie Bergey and Charlie Smith, the team behind Philadelphia Fashion Week

We have to give props to the team for their hard work they put into all of this. Hopefully going forward, we can really step it up and dig a little deeper fashion wise and really show the world what we can do.

Try Buy Or Deny: Kiehl's Rare Earth Pore Cleansing Masque

I had read some good things about the new Kiehl's Rare Earth line of products, which contain Amazonian White Clay and work to minimize and refine pores.

So during my shopping spree on Fashion's Night Out, I stopped into Kiehl's and decided to pick up the Pore Cleansing Masque. Now I've used clay masques before and wasn't really happy with the results as they had tended to be pretty harsh on my skin and actually pretty hard to scrub off. But I'm always down to try a new product, so I trusted the salesperson and bought it anyway.

And I'm glad I did!

The consistency is really smooth and I actually like the earthy scent. It takes about 5 minutes for it to dry then wipes off so easily with a little bit of water.

Afterwards my skin felt clean, refreshed, and yes, visibly looked better. For $22 bucks it's not exactly a cheap buy, but you do get a nice size jar at 5 fl. oz., so it will definitely last a few months as they recommend once or twice a week.

The verdict? TRY.

While it turned out great for us, those with extremely dry skin may run into some problems, but should definitely give it a shot as it greatly reduces pores and gives a great deep clean.

Trend Report: Spring 2010, Pattern Clash

The Spring 2010 collections recently came to a close and a consistent theme we saw throughout was looks made up of a mish-mosh of patterns and prints. No need to worry about being "too busy" here. To get the look right, balance it out with complementary tones and perfect proportions. Who says rules weren't meant to be broken?

Discuss: In Fashion's Uncertain Times, Where Do You Stand?

It's no secret the fashion industry has been ailing for quite some time now due to the recent economic downfall. Print mags have been folding left and right, it's nearly impossible to find a paying job, the twice-annual fashion weeks have seen plenty of scaling back to save funds, some labels have stopped producing, and well, you probably know how the retail side of things is going with endless sales and some stores not being able to weather the storm.

More recently, publishing powerhouse Conde Nast, who puts out titles like Vogue, Vanity Fair, W, Glamour, and Lucky announced that four of their titles would be shuttering; and they haven't even gotten through the 25% budget cuts for each title yet, which could see more lay-offs and other huge changes.

Just a few months ago at Paris haute couture, the fashion world watched with heavy hearts as legendary French designer Christian Lacroix presented what was assumed to be his final collection because of major financial struggles (on the bright side, a very promising recent bid by an Ajman Sheikh may save the house, but all this remains to be confirmed).

Then, in today's early morning hours, news broke that cult fashion icon Yohji Yamamoto, who produces his namesake line as well as Y-3, a sportswear line with Adidas, has filed for bankruptcy protection in Japan with company debts totaling around $67 million. And while an investor was immediately named to help him out of the crisis, in these rocky times, who knows what may happen down the road.

These are uncertain times indeed for fashion as we know it. Luxury is struggling while reasonably-priced high/low partnerships are announced almost every week. Is the economy and downright lack of consumer spending to blame? Sure, but then you have the focus changing from print to the ever-expanding new media of bloggers and online presences paired with society's increasing urge for instant-gratification and need-it-now news. So with all this, who knows, magazines and many retailers may be completely dead and gone in a few years. At the very least, we think it's safe to say we're in for some big changes in the way we purchase and digest fashion.

So, our question then is, do you welcome this new age of fashion? Would you rather eschew subscriptions and get all your fashion news through your laptop? What about how and what you buy? Do you want to see luxury die off in favor or more reasonable offerings? Are you finding more and more boxes being delivered to your door? Or do you prefer the "old-fashioned" way of things. The joy of getting a new magazine in the mail. Ogling the out-of-reach It bag. The full-on shopping experience. Tell us how you feel!

Chief Gay: Project Runway Season Six, Episode Seven

The challenge of the week was to create two looks in blue, while working in tandem with another designer. The winner would get to design a holiday dress for the INC line at Macyʼs. The teams shook out like this: DumbAlthea & StraightGuyLogan were paired together for your typical heterosexual tensionfest. Who cares? Theyʼd get us interested if Logan took his shirt off and gagged Althea with it. They were safe this week, their mediocrity unworthy even of the judgesʼ critiques.

Not-Shirin & SunnyYugoslavia found a way to disagree on everything they did together. They blatantly contradicted each other in front of Tim, proving themselves out of their minds. He has the "Gunn Kiss of Death" people! Donʼt mess with that! Despite bickering, they were the only team to show a self-created pattern and the judges loved SunnyYugoʼs top which was both sheer and classy.

CornFedCaroleHannah & ActualShirinʼs clothes captured the risk-less style of INC perfectly. Their garments looked expensive, each had a great scooping, yet still modest, neckline, and would easily be gobbled up by millions of confused consumers across the country. For understanding how to bend to the higher power of Macyʼs, this team surely deserved to win the most.

ChinStrap & BobMarley were incredibly compatible teammates, but hoo boy did they make some ugly clothes! Their looks were not modern and completely disconnected from each other: “a disco-pumpkin” and a 70s shirt-dress.

OfCourseYourNameIsLouise & NicolasRasputin were the final team. Louise literally lost her money and her sketches at Mood, and couldnʼt even use her bird-calls to locate them. Louise chose to put ruffles on both the dresses, which didnʼt help either to look more like INC clothing. Once it was clear to the judges that Louise operates on her own planet, they sent her home. Unfortunately for us NicolasRasputin had immunity and isnʼt going anywhere....yet.

In the end, Not-Shirin Irina won. Look for her holiday dress in the INC section of your local Macyʼs this season!
